Master of Public Health: Health Policy and Management Concentration

The MPH curriculum is a non-thesis professional preparation degree program that consists of 42 semester credit hours. Part-time students may earn their degree in two to three years by taking classes in the evenings and late afternoons. Core courses for the degree include health and society, principles of epidemiology, fundamentals of program evaluation, biostatistics, environmental health science and public health policy and administration. The MPH degree offers three concentrations, including a focus on health policy and management. A major focus of this concentration is to improve the graduate’s ability to handle population-based program management, particularly in community-based health settings. The aspiring health administrator will develop critical skills in program planning and administration, communications, human resources management, financial management, team leadership and the facilitation of change. In order to be admitted into the program, graduates must have completed introductory undergraduate courses in public health, statistics and accounting.

The School of Public Health at the University of Memphis is focused on translating research into practice and on preparing the next generation of leaders to address public health concerns. The School actively works with leaders and officials to take on pressing health issues such as heart disease, asthma and HIV/AID, and both the faculty and students are active participants in public health practice and research.

Master of Health Administration

The Master of Health Administration consists of 53 semester hours, not including prerequisites that students may be required to take prior to admittance. The degree includes a variety of core courses such as healthcare economics, quantitative methods for health services, human resources administration and health care finance. Students will also be exposed to managerial epidemiology, administration of health service organizations and health management leadership, which will allow them to develop the skills necessary to take an active role in public health. Other core courses include health planning, health administration law, health care finance and health administration information systems. Six hours of graduate course electives, a 300-hour internship and an integrative capstone experience are also required.

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health degree consists of 42 semester hours and offers concentrations in five areas of study: biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health systems and social and behavioral sciences. The core curriculum of the MPH program consists of coursework in environmental health, social and behavioral sciences principles, health policy and organization of health service, foundations of public health, epidemiology in public health and biostatistical methods. Students must also take at least 18 hours of electives or six hours of electives if a concentration is chosen, including courses such as health behavior theories, health care ethics, health management leadership and health care economics.

Master of Public Health: Biostatistics Concentration

The biostatistics concentration includes 12 credit hours, and students will take courses in mixed model regression analysis, applied survival analysis in public health, applied categorical data analysis and biostatistical methods. Students must choose six hours of electives if they pursue the biostatistics concentration, including courses such as rural and urban poverty, gender and health, randomized clinical trials, critical issues in global health and lifespan nutrition.

Master of Public Health: Environmental Health Concentration

Students pursuing a Master of Public Health with an environmental health concentration are required to take courses in environmental sampling and analysis, environmental policy and decision-making, principles of exposure and risk assessment and environmental toxicology. Six hours of electives are also required, and students may choose from a variety of courses such as health promotion, public health nutrition, study tour in foods and nutrition, health promotion and politics of environment change.

Master of Public Health: Epidemiology Concentration

The Master of Public Health with a concentration in epidemiology consists of an additional 15 credit hours, and students will take courses in epidemiologic survey methods, biostatistical methods and epidemiology in public health. In addition, students must choose one of the following four courses: epidemiology, infectious diseases, cancer and epidemiology and epidemiology of chronic disease. The school requires an additional six hours of electives for the degree, and topics may include global issues in public health, critical issues in global health, physical activity and public health, health behavior theories and applied multivariate statistics.

Master of Public Health: Health Systems Concentration

Students pursuing the Master of Public Health with a Health Systems concentration must take 15 credit hours of courses in addition to the core degree requirements. Class include quality and outcomes management in health care, health information systems, health care economics and health policy, theory and methods. Students may choose electives to fulfill the additional six-credit-hour requirement, and options include classes that cover topics such as global perspectives on nursing and health policy, health planning, GIS and human health and aging, public health and health services.
